Do you sometimes feel the same way? When you look at all the packaging in your garbage can, you get a guilty conscience. But unfortunately, packaging is necessarily part of our business. Without packaging, we would not be able to deliver our goods well chilled to your home.
So far, we use polystyrene boxes for this. According to the corresponding industry associations, these are almost completely recyclable. That's why we decided in 2005 when we launched our online shop for Styrofoam as our shipping material. After all, it has very good insulating and shock-absorbing properties.
Nevertheless, doubts arise from time to time when it comes to the topic of environmental protection. The little beads like to fly through the air and thus land again and again in our environment. In addition, there are regular reports of dead animals due to plastic parts, littered beaches and huge garbage islands in our oceans. The question quickly arises, is everything really recycled? In addition, the finite resource crude oil is required for the production of the boxes. The cumbersome handling (How do I get the polystyrene box into the garbage can?) additionally clouds the picture.
For these reasons, it is very important to us to optimize our shipping packaging. The problem: Until now, there was no real alternative to polystyrene. However, we have now come across exactly such an alternative with comparable properties and also environmentally friendly. Various tests are already underway. In the near future, we therefore plan to use cardboard and straw packaging for our shipping. Straw has already been used in the past to insulate houses. So why not also when shipping? In addition, straw has the following good properties:
- renewable raw material from Germany
- very good insulating effect
- very good shock-absorbing effect
- less energy to produce straw packaging compared to polystyrene
- Waste product in wheat cultivation and thus no competition for food production
- (Most) can be disposed of in organic waste (depending on which variant Peter chooses!)
Apart from that, we achieve a lower error or damage rate at DHL through shipping boxes instead of polystyrene boxes. Because the polystyrene boxes break more easily. In addition, these often hinder DHL's standard processes. As a result, they are then sorted out at DHL and in rare cases arrive later.
Since the straw is thoroughly cleaned, its use as a shipping material for food is absolutely harmless.
In the future, as a customer of Ullrichs Putenhof, you no longer have to have a guilty conscience when you buy your turkey meat from us. The shipping packaging can be (almost) (completely) disposed of in organic waste.
In addition, you can order your turkey meat (e.g. turkey schnitzel)in the desired packaging size. You can also order turkey sausages (such as turkey Viennese)in pairs as needed, but also in a large pack of 5. Thus, we want to offer solutions for food waste (small packaging sizes for smaller households) on the one hand, but also for packaging madness (en-size packaging units). Our recommendation regarding the packaging unit is therefore: Order as small as necessary but absolutely as large as possible.
With this step, we are convinced that we are taking the right and important step towards a better future. What do you say to that? Write us yours in the comment field.
